Example 2: GENERAL STRIKE IN SPAIN AGAINST LABOUR REFORM – 29/3/2012
A 24-hour general strike took place in Spain today in protest at the proposed labour reform and cuts to public services.
Millions took to the streets in cities and towns across the country, with 77% of public sector workers on strike, according to unions.
The proposed labour law will make it easier for companies to lay off workers as well as cutting redundancy pay and restricting workers´ rights to strike and negotiate.
The protests take place on the eve of predicted further cuts to public services by Rajoy’s newly elected Popular Party, in order to reduce Spain’s budget deficit.
Protests were peaceful and lively, except in Barcelona, where more than 200 rubbish containers were set alight by demonstrators and riot police fired rubber bullets.
“All of the rights that our grandparents fought for will disappear in a second if this goes through,” said Patricia Vitaller, a striker and care home worker from Zaragoza.
“If we don’t strike now, we can’t complain later,” said Aurora Frias, a 43- year -old secondary school teacher, also on strike in Zaragoza.
Leaders of the main union federations, CCOO and UGT warned of ‘further social upheaval’ if these proposals go through.
